Foundations of Evolution and Animal Behavior

Have you ever wondered why animals behave the way they do, from complex social rituals to survival instincts? Understanding the evolutionary roots of behavior provides profound insights into the natural world and our place within it. This course will equip you with the essential knowledge to analyze and interpret animal behaviors through an evolutionary lens. By completing this course, you will develop a solid grasp of key evolutionary concepts and their direct application to understanding behavioral patterns across species. You will gain the ability to critically examine how natural selection, genetics, and environmental factors interact to produce the rich tapestry of animal actions. What you'll learn: * Understand the core mechanisms of evolution, including natural selection, genetic drift, and adaptation. * Learn the fundamental principles of ethology and behavioral ecology, examining both innate and learned behaviors. * Explore the genetic and environmental influences that shape behavioral development and expression. * Analyze complex social behaviors such as cooperation, altruism, and communication from an evolutionary perspective. * Apply evolutionary concepts to understand reproductive strategies, mate choice, and parent-offspring conflicts. * Practice interpreting scientific studies on animal behavior and evolutionary patterns through written examples. This course begins with an introduction to foundational evolutionary theory, progressing through the biological basis of behavior to advanced topics in behavioral ecology and social behavior. Each section is designed to build upon previous knowledge, ensuring a clear and comprehensive learning path. This course is designed for absolute beginners with no prior knowledge of biology or evolutionary theory. If you are curious about the origins of animal behavior and want to establish a robust scientific foundation, this course is for you. Start your journey into the fascinating world of evolutionary behavior today.
