Foundations of Astronomy: Understanding the Cosmos

Discover the physical laws and observational methods that govern our universe with a comprehensive guide to modern astronomy. This text-based course breaks down complex cosmic phenomena into structured, accessible written lessons, helping you build a solid scientific foundation from the ground up. You will begin with essential astronomical terms, coordinate systems, and basic orbital mechanics before progressing to star evolution, planetary science, and deep-space objects. What you will learn: - Understand core astronomical terminology, celestial spheres, and coordinate systems - Explore the formation, structure, and dynamics of planetary bodies in our solar system - Analyze stellar lifecycles, from nebular origins to main sequence stars and compact remnants - Learn the fundamentals of modern observational techniques and multi-wavelength astronomy - Examine cosmological principles, galactic structures, and the expansion of the universe - Apply quantitative reasoning to basic astronomical calculations and distance measurements The text begins with introductory concepts and historical models, moving step-by-step into modern astrophysical principles and recent discoveries. This course is designed for curious beginners, aspiring science students, and amateur stargazers with no prior background in physics or calculus required.
